What to Wear to the US Open

Flatlay fashion guide showing 9 essentials for attending the US Open tennis tournament including light blue polo shirt, white sneakers, sunglasses, tennis racket necklace, and white dress outfit ideas

The U.S. Open is almost here and there’s nothing like the energy of tennis season in New York City! Whether you’re a local or traveling to NYC to catch the tournament, figuring out what to wear to the US Open is part of the fun. I’ve been playing tennis on and off for years, so I love seeing the best of the best compete, plus you can’t beat court-side people-watching and sipping on a Honey Deuce (or three).

Below, I’m sharing my favorite US Open outfit ideas that balance comfort, style, and that perfectly polished tennis aesthetic so you can look chic whether you’re cheering in the stands or strolling the grounds!

WHAT TO WEAR TO THE U.S. OPEN

1. RALPH LAUREN POLO DRESS

A polo dress is always a safe bet to wear to a tennis tournament! It’s a classic silhouette that can be dressed up or dressed down! Add sneakers for a sportier look, or pair it with sandals or ballet flats for something more polished.

2. Le Specs Air Heart Sunglasses

Of course no tennis match outfit is complete without a chic pair of sunglasses. The Le Specs Air Heart sunglasses have long been a favorite pair of mine — the perfect meeting of form and function! And even better, they’re under $100.

3. Polo U.S. Open Baseball Cap

I am in love with this adorable Ralph Lauren teddy bear hat! It’s perfect to wear to the U.S. Open and beyond.

4. J.crew ballet sneakers

I’m all about leaning into the comfortability of a sporty sneaker! There can be a lot of walking required if you’re attending the U.S. Open, so why not opt for a pair of stylish sneakers? I’m really into the feminine details of this pair!

5. aurate tennis racket necklace

How pretty is this lab grown sapphire tennis racket necklace? The perfect U.S. Open accessory that says “tennis” without going overboard.

6. STONEY CLOVER LANE Clear Stadium Purse

One of the most frustrating aspects of a sporting event is sorting out the bag policy. Keep things easy and stick with a chic clear bag you can use well into football season as well!

7. Rhone Court to Course Athletic Dress

Lean in and opt for a sporty, comfortable, sweat wicking athletic dress. This classic tennis dress from Rhone is perfect for the U.S. Open — add a cute pair of sneakers and a baseball cap to complete the look.

8. LULULEMON MATCH POINT BASEBALL CAP

If you’re attending during the day, sun protection is key. So why not use the opportunity to pick up a fun new tennis hat?

9. POSSE LINEN TANK AND LINEN SHORTS

If you’re going for something more polished (a la the queen of tennis fashion, Morgan Riddle!), I suggest a tailored linen set. Lightweight linen makes this set from Posse ideal — it’s still hot up here in New York! Add a chic mini bag and some comfortable sandals and you’re ready to go.

tips for getting dressed for the u.s. open:

  • Prioritize comfort: You’ll be walking from the Subway, standing in lines, and exploring the ground for hours. Choose supportive sneakers, and skip any clothing that’s too tight or restrictive. Trust me, blisters aren’t cute!
  • Prepare for heat + humidity: The U.S. Open happens during peak New York summer, so it’s going to be hot AND muggy. Opt for lightweight, breathable pieces that won’t cling to your skin. Mini dresses, shorts, and sleeveless or short-sleeved tops will keep you cooler and more comfortable all day. Bring a mini fan for relief!
  • Check the venue bag policy: Most sporting events have strict bag restrictions. A clear stadium bag is your best bet — it checks the boxes and works for the rest of the summer too.
  • Go for a polished look: Think tailored linen, classic silhouettes, and chic basics. You want to look put-together, but not like you’re heading to a black-tie event!

What to Wear to the U.S. Open

1. COTTON Mini Dress

An easy, breezy cotton poplin mini dress will keep you cool while still looking stylish at the U.S. Open! Add a sporty pair of Adidas Sambas and tennis inspired socks, a baseball hat, and clear crossbody stadium bag.

2. POLO Dress

A tennis inspired polo dress is another fun option for the U.S. Open that feels on theme. Just add sneakers for walking, a clear crossbody bag, and cool $50 sunnies to bring the whole outfit together.

3. DENNIM Dress

I think a denim shift dress is a fun little nod to the “American” aspect of the US Open! Something that’s easy to move around in and is breezy is key! Now is definitely not the time for something formfitting and uncomfortable, especially if you’re spending the whole day on the U.S. Open grounds. Pair with a raffia basket bag, sunglasses, and minimal sandals. Don’t forget a fan!

4. Matching Linen Set

If you’re going for a dressier U.S. Open look, a tailored linen set is the way to go. Posse makes gorgeous linen pieces, including this vest and skirt. Add this adorable tennis purse, tennis racket bracelet, sandals and a straw sun hat.
