What To Wear In NYC In Fall
I consider myself lucky to be a New Yorker all year round, but especially in the fall! Fall is one of my favorite times in the city — there are endless fall activities, shows to see, restaurants to try, and picture-perfect NYC streets to wander down. If you’re planning to visit NYC this fall, I’m rounding up some outfits for inspiration so you can be fashionable and comfortable!

I’ve lived in NYC for over 10 years and find that fall in NYC is always a grab bag, so figuring out how to dress for fall here can be tricky! I’m going to share more about the fall weather before diving into actual outfits to help you better decide which outfits to wear or recreate for your NYC trip!
Fall Weather In NYC
The temperatures can fluctuate greatly in New York City in the fall. Average fall temperatures range from the mid-high 70s to the mid to low 40s. This year, especially, We’ve even had some days in the 80s this fall! I always recommend to check the weather before your trip and pack layers! Leather jackets, barn jackets, or cardigans that match multiple outfits are key to ensuring you stay comfortable. I also believe in packing shoes that will be comfortable all day are key! Of course one of the best things about New York is the shopping, so if you happen to have unexpected weather you couldn’t be in a better place to add something new to your closet!
7 NYC Fall Outfits
Barn Jacket and Jeans
This outfit has become one of my early fall weekend uniforms, especially for a Sunday game day with friends. The Levi’s dad jeans have such a comfortable fit, I love them styled with this sporty sweatshirt and Adidas Sambas. Top with a plaid barn jacket and you’re ready for a day out and about! This houndstooth quilted jacket also caught my eye. I’ve been using this mini Boat and Tote bag as a purse and I’m obsessed.

Structured Sweater and Satin Pants
Silky, satin pants have been one of my favorite trends this fall, dressing up at night with heels or down with sneakers for day. I’ve found so many great pairs in a variety of colors, fits and prices from Reformation to J.Crew! I loved pairing these pants with a more structured cardigan (similar here) and also my new chocolate brown Bottega Veneta bag I picked up in Rome!
Trench Coat, Sneakers and Ball Cap
I love trench coats for fall in New York City! It’s the perfect chic topper for almost any outfit. I styled it here with my current favorite Dad jeans, white sneakers, and beloved Ritz Paris ball cap. And I love the pop of red from a cable knit sweater draped over my shoulders! I love this outfit for running errands or grabbing a coffee with friends.
Cashmere Sweater, Jeans and Suede Tote
I’m really leaning into casual but chic basics this fall, and is there anything more luxurious than slipping into a cashmere sweater? I layered mine over my favorite white tee and paired it with relaxed Dad jeans and Sambas. This charm necklace is one of my favorite new accessories along with a slouchy suede tote. Love this for a cozy weekend brunch look.
Black Sweater Dress
This black knit dress from Everyone Loves the Weekend has fast become one of my favorite little black dresses for fall in New York (this is a similar style). I styled it with a slingback block heel for dinner, but you could also style it with ankle boots for something more casual. Perfect for a dinner out or if you’re looking for an outfit to wear to a Broadway show!
Blazer and Satin Skirt
You really can’t go wrong with an all black outfit for a night out in NYC. I’m all about layering in the fall, so I paired lace trim slip skirt (you could also use a slip dress) with my favorite basic tee, a blazer and tall boots. This is great for those early fall nights when it’s not so cold that you need a full wool coat!
Black Bow Dress
If the weather allows for it, I love dresses and skirts in the fall. This little black dress with bows from Hill House Home was practically made for me and perfect for a girl’s night out or a date night! This is another cute LBD for a night out.
