9 Transitional Wardrobe Staples
One of my favorite things about late summer in New York City is that hint of crispness in the morning air! You know, the one that makes you want to grab a light sweater before heading out the door for a morning coffee? While I’m still savoring warm sunny days, I’m also starting to pull out pieces to help make the shift from summer to fall effortless.
The secret to dressing for this in-between season is finding staples that can handle both cool mornings and warm afternoons, and still feel stylish no matter what the weather does. So today I’m rounding up nine go-to summer-to-fall transitional wardrobe staples!
9 TRANSITIONAL WARDROBE STAPLES

1. Lightweight Jacket
A lightweight jacket is the ultimate layering piece for unpredictable weather. Denim jackets, chore jackets, barn jackets, or utility jackets are perfect to throw over dresses, skirts, or pair with jeans. They add just the right amount of warmth without feeling heavy. I love having one in a neutral color so it pairs with everything, but a fun pattern like gingham can also be a great way to freshen up basics you’ve been wearing all summer.
For travel days, a lightweight jacket is a lifesaver — it instantly pulls an outfit together and keeps you comfortable in chilly airports or air-conditioned trains.
2. Lightweight Cardigan
Whether draped over your shoulders on a cool evening or buttoned up as a top, a featherweight cardigan is a staple I always keep handy this time of year. I gravitate toward soft knits in neutral colors that I can throw one on over anything from jeans to slip dresses.
3. Sweater Tee
The best of both worlds — a sweater tee gives you the cozy texture of knitwear, but in a short sleeve silhouette when it’s too warm for long sleeves. It’s perfect for pairing with wide leg trousers or denim now, then layering under blazers or cardigans as temps drop. Plus (for my corporate girlies), the slightly dressier feel makes it a great work-to-weekend piece! Choose lighter, breathable knits for late summer and swap to slightly chunkier textures when it gets cold. This shrunken version also caught my eye.
4. Trench Coat
For those early fall days when it’s too warm for a proper fall or winter coat (but too chilly to go without one) a cropped trench coat is the perfect solution. It’s timeless, polished, and works for everything from work outfits to weekend errands. A classic beige or camel shade will never go out of style, and how fun is this one with a cute scarf detail?
5. Midi Dress
While I’m always sad to say goodbye to my summer dresses, a chic midi dress (especially in a rich fall hue) is a perfect for bridging the gap between summer and fall! Opt for a smocked dress, a shirtdress, or an easy t-shirt dress. Style it with sandals now, then layer on a cardigan, jacket, or trench once fall fully arrives. Choosing one in a neutral print or solid color makes it even easier to style multiple ways. You can also transition a midi dress with accessories — swap your straw tote for a leather crossbody and your look instantly feels more autumnal.
6. Wide Leg Denim
If you’ve been living in shorts all summer, wide leg denim is the perfect step towards fall. The relaxed fit feels effortless with a tank and sandals in August, but just as chic with a sweater and ankle boots come fall. I especially love medium washes this time of year for an easy, seasonless look. I’ve been living in these Levi’s 90s jeans, and also love these cropped 501s.
7. Knit Dress
A short sleeve knit dress is one of those magical pieces that works in nearly every season, but really works during the summer-to-fall transition. In late summer, I’d style mine with woven flats or sneakers for a casual day look, and in fall add tall boots and a trench or leather jacket for extra warmth. Ribbed knit dresses and polo dresses are especially versatile, especially in neutral tones like camel, black, or cream. The best part? They’re just as comfortable as your favorite loungewear, but look a hundred times more put together!
8. Woven Flats
A chic pair of woven leather flats are the perfect shoe when it’s too soon for boots but you’re ready to swap out sandals. They add texture to an outfit and instantly make it feel polished. Try them with cropped trousers, dresses, or even jeans for an stylish day-to-night look. I think a pair with a more open weave can also be great for bridging the season.
9. Sneakers
A good pair of sneakers works year round, but they really shine for transitional dressing! They’re comfortable enough for long city walks and pair just as well with a midi or mini dress as they do with jeans. I always keep a classic, neutral pair in rotation (but of course I never shy away from a bit of color!) For early fall, I love a leather or suede sneaker for some fun texture, which instantly feels more seasonal than canvas.
Transitional Wardrobe Styling Tips
Knowing what staples to invest in is the first step, but styling them well is what makes your transitional wardrobe really work! Here are some of my favorite tips for creating transitional outfits that feel polished, effortless, and seasonally appropriate between the hot days of August and the cool temperatures of October.
1. Play with Layering Proportions
One of the easiest ways to make an outfit feel more intentional is to mix lengths and weights. Try pairing a cropped lightweight jacket with a flowy midi dress, or layer a long trench over wide leg denim for a sleek, elongated look. Playing with proportion keeps things interesting and adds depth to your outfit.
2. Mix Seasonal Fabrics
You don’t have to ditch all your summer fabrics at once. In fact, pairing lighter pieces with cozier ones creates a great balance (and looks effortlessly chic). Think linen trousers with a knit sweater tee, or a breezy cotton dress layered under a chunky cardigan. The contrast not only adds visual interest, but keeps you comfortable in changing temps!
3. Lean Into a Fall Color Palette Early
Even if it’s still warm out, shifting your color palette can instantly make your outfits feel more autumnal! Swap out bright summer tones for richer shades like camel, olive, burgundy, navy, or rust. You can still keep light colored pieces in rotation, just balance them with deeper tones in your accessories or outer layers. This is especially helpful if you live somewhere that stays hot well into fall!
4. Use Accessories to Transition Faster
Accessories are the quickest (and most affordable) way to shift your outfit toward the next season. A lightweight scarf, structured bag in a deeper tone, or a pair of gold hoop earrings can make a summer dress feel ready for fall. Shoes are especially powerful here — swapping sandals for woven flats or sneakers can change the whole vibe of a look.
5. Balance Comfort and Style
This is the season where comfort and style meet in the middle. Sneakers with dresses, flats with trousers, cardigans instead of blazers — it’s all about finding the pieces that make you look put together while still feeling relaxed. Transitional dressing should make your life easier, not more complicated!
