During quarantine in 2020 (wow, what a throwback) me and my roommates started a movie jar to help pass the time and cross off ones that had been on our bucket list for years. Now with all things Halloween beginning, we wanted to put a new spin on it and do a Halloween movie jar for October as well as soak up our last couple weeks as roommates!
I’m not much of a scary movie/haunted house/slasher film kind of Halloween person. I’m more of a witchy/cozy/all things pumpkin kind of Halloween person. With that being said, the list below includes some spooky picks, as well as more lighthearted and fun Halloween movies.
Round up your group of friends, prep your fall snacks, and bookmark this list of 25 fun Halloween movies to watch for your next spooky season movie night!
25 FUN HALLOWEEN MOVIES TO WATCH
1. Practical Magic
I can’t get enough of this ’90s movie starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as witch sisters discovering the gift of practical magic. Also can we talk about the style?! Such a great pick for a movie night with girlfriends and you can rent on Prime Video!
2. Hocus Pocus
One of the most iconic Halloween movies! I’m convinced you’re never too old for Hocus Pocus – from kids to adults, everyone can enjoy this movie. It’s a great family friendly film. I just love seeing Sarah Jessica Parker in this role!
3. A Nightmare on Elm Street
I don’t often dabble in the horror genre, but if you do you must check out this slasher movie from the ’80s that first introduced the world to killer Freddy Krueger.
4. Halloweentown
Anyone else nostalgic for Disney Channel Original Movies? This one is certainly up there for me. Also how wild is it that the actress who played Marnie Piper reconnected with (and is now engaged to) her costar from Halloweentown 2?!
5. Scream
Talk about iconic. This murder mystery/slasher franchise now includes six films but you have to start with the original from 1996!
6. Blair Witch Project
The 1999 film Blair Witch Project was truly a cultural reset. It’s a supernatural horror film that’s meant to look like a real documentary. If you scare easily (like me!) I wouldn’t recommend this movie!
7. Beetlejuice
This ’80s fantasy/horror movie has a stacked cast – Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara?! This feels like one of those rites of passage Halloween movies!
8. Ghostbusters
How could I make a Halloween movie list and not include Ghostbusters? This 1984 supernatural comedy is just all around iconic and continues to be one of the most popular Halloween costumes around! This is always a crowd pleaser!
9. The Witches of Eastwick
Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Susan Sarandon star as the titular witches in this ’80s comedy/horror movie. I find this is an often underrated movie so definitely recommend watching if you haven’t seen it!
10. Casper
A heartwarming film about a friendly young ghost and a staple of my childhood. Raise your hand if you had a crush on the “boy” version of Casper at the end of the movie! Such a great family friendly pick.
11. Halloween
This 1978 slasher film stars Jamie Lee Curtis in her debut acting role. It’s widely considered one of the greatest horror films of all time!
12. Death Becomes Her
Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, and Bruce Willis (hello star studded cast!) star in this satirical fantasy movie about a magic potion that promises eternal youth. Another under-the-radar Halloween movie.
13. Sleepy Hollow
Loosely based on Washington Irving’s short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” this movie stars (a very young) Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci. It follows Ichabod Crane as he investigates the decapitation of three people and the mysterious Headless Horseman.
14. Carrie
This ’70s adaptation of a Stephen King novel is also regarded as one of the best horror movies of all time. The prom scene alone is cultural cannon!
15. Edward Scissorhands
Johnny Depp stars in this modern fairytale as a lonely man who has scissors for hands and falls for Winona Ryder. This is a surprisingly poignant film!
16. The Witches
This is a newer movie (2020) starring Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer. It’s based on a Roald Dahl book about some glamorous but nefarious witches. There is also a version from 1990 starring Anjelica Huston. Another great family friendly option on Disney Plus.
17. Boo! A Madea Halloween
If you are in need of a laugh, you have to watch this installment in Tyler Perry’s Madea series.
18. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
For peak nostalgia and cozy fall vibes, you can’t go wrong with a re-watch of this Charlie Brown classic. It always brings me back to childhood and the music is very sweet.
19. Scary Movie
Another great option if true horror movies aren’t your thing, the Scary Movie franchise actually spoofs famous slasher/horror films and it makes for a raucous good time. A fun movie to watch with a group of friends!
20. Ready or Not
Another recent film (2019), this comedy horror movie follows a beautiful bride on her wedding night and a game of hide and seek with a dark twist. Less “scary” and more “suspenseful.”
21. Teen Witch
A high school girl learns she descends from a long line of witches on her 16th birthday. This movie from 1989 stars Blake Lively’s older sister, Robyn Lively! Another great girls night choice.
22. Double, Double Toil and Trouble
The OG Halloween movie of my childhood! This Mary Kate and Ashley classic is about two adventurous little girls who learn their Great Aunt has been trapped and cursed by her evil twin. I haven’t seen this in so long I’d be curious to see how it holds up.
23. The Haunted Mansion
Based off the Disney theme park ride, this movie starring Eddie Murphy is about a workaholic realtor who becomes trapped in a haunted mansion. This is a great family movie!
24. The Addams Family
This 1991 movie stars Anjelica Huston as Morticia and Christina Ricci as Wednesday in the bizarre Addams Family. If you liked Wednesday on Netflix, you must add this to your watchlist. It’s a classic!
25. Twitches
Another Disney Channel Original Movie MVP, this movie stars Tia and Tamara Mowry as teen witches who were separated at birth. You can stream this and so many other DCOMs on Disney Plus!
Oh my goodness that popcorn looks amazing! I need to buy this asap 🙂
