How To Dress For Fall When It’s Still Hot Outside

One of the trickiest times to get dressed is that in-between stage where it’s technically fall, but the weather still feels like summer. The mornings may have a little crispness in the air, but by the afternoon you’re sweating through your “cute fall outfit.” So what’s a girl to do? The key to transitional dressing when it’s still hot outside is leaning into transitional staples, layering wisely, and choosing colors and textures that feel autumnal even if the temps don’t.
Today I’m sharing some of my favorite tips (plus some outfit ideas!) for transitional dressing and making the shift into fall fashion without overheating. Don’t miss my transitional wardrobe staples if you’re looking for additional fall fashion inspo!
HOW TO DRESS FOR FALL WHEN IT’S STILL HOT OUTSIDE
1. Start With Lightweight Layers
Layering is what makes fall style so fun, but when it’s still 80 degrees piling on sweaters isn’t the answer. Instead, opt for breathable fabrics and pieces that you can easily take off or drape over your shoulders. A denim jacket, a barn jacket, or a cropped trench instantly add a fall vibe without feeling stuffy. Cotton button-downs are also great because they can double as a lightweight jacket over a tank or dress, while featherweight cardigans can be tossed over your shoulders until you actually need them.
The key is to make your outfit look intentional without being impractical. I always keep one light outer layer in my tote bag because the weather in early fall can be unpredictable and you just never know!
2. Swap In Fall Colors
Even if the fabric still feels summery, changing your color palette can completely shift a look. Instead of bright colors and pastels, I like to lean into warm neutrals like camel, cream, and navy, or richer tones like olive, rust, burgundy, and mustard. Jewel tones are another favorite this time of year — think deep emerald or plum.
Take your favorite summer dress and style it with loafers instead of sandals, or wear white jeans with a navy top and tan flats. It’s such an easy way to feel more in season without needing an entirely new wardrobe.
3. Choose Transitional Fabrics
Another trick is to think about fabrics and textures. Cotton, linen blends, silk, and poplin are still breathable enough for warm days, but you can start sprinkling in touches of cozier textures here and there! A suede crossbody bag, a cashmere sweater tee, or a leather belt instantly feel fall-appropriate without leaving you overheated.
I especially love mixing a lighter fabric with a richer texture. A breezy cotton midi dress with suede mules, or linen trousers paired with a short sleeve knit top, always feels just right for September.
4. Transition Your Accessories First
Accessories are my favorite way to shift into a new season. Swap out your straw bags for a structured leather tote or crossbody and opt for loafers or ballet flat instead of sandals. Even these little tweaks make such a difference in helping your look feel ready for fall.
Shoes especially have the power to change the vibe of an outfit. Think woven ballet flats in a deep cognac, suede sneakers, or a classic pair of loafers.
5. Restyle Your Summer Staples
Don’t feel like you need to pack everything away the second Labor Day hits! Instead, think about how you can restyle your summer favorites. A floral midi dress suddenly feels fall-ready when layered under a denim jacket with sneakers. A white tank becomes work-appropriate when tucked into wide leg jeans with sweater draped over your shoulders. Even shorts can stretch further into the season when styled with a lightweight cardigan or white button down.
It’s all about small adjustments! Swapping one piece or accessory can take your outfit from high summer to early fall in an instant.
Fall Outfit Ideas For Warm Days

1. Summer Silhouettes in Fall Colors
When the temperatures are in the 90s, reach for a summer dress in a fall color! This smocked brown dress under $200 is a perfection option. I would pair it with breathable woven flats, a mini vegan suede tote, gold earrings, and brown sunnies. Even though the dress itself is summery, the accessories and styling lean fall.

2. Dress in Layers
Layers are a great way to channel fall vibes while the weather is warm, especially if you’re moving between fluctuating temperatures. Starting with my go-to pair of Levi’s, I’d layer a simple white tank beneath a featherweight cardigan. A cropped trench adds a chic topper to the look, accessorized with neutral flats and a fall-forward navy suede bag.

3. Summer Silhouettes in Fall Fabrics
This vegan suede mini dress is the perfect way to lean into fall, even if the temperatures are soaring! Plus as the weather cools you could layer it over tights or a tissue turtleneck. I would drape a neutral cable knit cardigan over my shoulders as an extra layer, and pair with a mini black bag and leopard print flats for a fun pop of print.
